Doreen was born on 3 June 1936 at Ipswich in Suffolk. She was the first child of Emily & Samuel Corbyn. Her early childhood was spent in Woodhouse Square where she lived with her sister Hazel, & brother Michael. Sadly, Michael died in a tragic accident. Times were hard, and before long Ipswich was hit by the bombing of the second world war. When Emily married Len Brooks, Doreen & family moved to the Stoke area of the town. Doreen would be blessed with another sister Sheila, & two brother’s John & Billy. Doreen remained close to her Dad & used to visit him with her friend Peggy at Nacton. Doreen remained close to both parents until they passed away. In later life she tried to visit her brothers & sisters when she could. At an early age Doreen showed she was a caring person & remained so until her passing at St.Austell Community Hospital on 15 March 2007. As a girl Doreen organized little shows involving 5 of her friends, singing songs & dancing. These shows were put on in her back garden at Stoke & all the proceeds were given to the charity for Leprosy. Doreen went to Christchurch Secondary School for Girls in Ipswich where she was very mature for her young years. She was a slim ‘bonnie girl’ who was top of her class at ‘cookery’. When any guests or dignitaries visited their school Doreen and friend Peggy were always called upon to make the sandwiches. A strong childhood memory for Doreen was the school trip she made to Gloucestershire where she stayed at Bourton on the Water. This is where she had great fun with school friends & would form a bond with Peggy Brown, which would last a lifetime. After a while Doreen’s family moved back to Woodhouse Square where her Mum remained until her passing in 2001. Doreen used to love to go to the Saturday morning cinema & recalled singing along to the signature tune, ‘Don’t Fence Me In.’ After leaving school Doreen worked at Pawsleys the Newsagents off the Rope Walk. She loved her job and they thought a lot of her. At the tender age of 16 a young regular serviceman caught Doreen’s eye. Gerald Allen all the way from Cornwall, serving in the RAF Regiment soon became a big part of Doreen’s life. Doreen followed Gerald back to Cornwall where they were married at St.Austell Registry office, first living with Gerald’s parents before moving to Tremayne Road. They were blessed with four children, David, Shirley, Tina & Gerald. Doreen was a kind, loving wife & mother. She gave Tina being handicapped with learning disabilities lots of time, love & patience. Doreen always did her best to support the work of organisations like Doubletrees School, P.H.A.B. & the Gateway club. With the children at school Doreen found work as a cleaner and over the years worked at different premises including John Keay House, the Veterinary Surgery, Polkyth Doctor’s Surgery & the Education Office. Away from work she loved music & had a large collection of Country & Western records & tapes. This interest later grew into Doreen & Gerald helping to start the White Water Weavers American Square Dance Club with Glyn Harcombe as caller. When Glyn left the club Gerald & Doreen successfully kept the club alive with dancing in St.Austell & at Foxhole. Doreen was very good with her ‘singing calls’. They did many demonstrations & even entered a float in the St.Austell Carnival. With their love of dancing came two more things they did together running the Lone Star Country Disco and Gerald teaching ‘line dancing’ locally. Doreen was such a caring person in a busy life she still managed to fit in others & did voluntary work at Trevarna. This was a woman who despite being unable to talk due to suffering M.N.D. still got through to her family the needs of others in her ward. Being away from Ipswich was a wrench in the early years but Cornwall became her home & she took pride in watching her grandchildren & great greatchildren grow away. A highlight in Doreen’s life was being able to visit Nashville & Graceland in 2006. To sum up a person such as Doreen is an impossible task, here we have a selfless caring person who did so much for so many who was taken by a cruel & debilitating disease. Her memory will live in you all that knew & loved her!
